I did a search for a composer (Mike Portnoy) on ascap.com and it gave me an IPI No. of 128426086. However when I want to enter that into the MB artist it says:

  • This is not a valid IPI
  • Field must be at least 11 characters. You entered 9

So are ASCAP IPIs wrong or why doesn't it accept them?

I think ASCAP IPIs are just missing 2 leading zeros.

BTW IPI codes are a bit obscure by nature, since this is not a standardized but a proprietary code.

I guess system should accept 9 characters IPIs and add the missing zeros.

The Spanish work database uses stuff like "274.373.649". We could make this strip the dots before adding zeros

Nicolás: This is already done Dots are not an issue, try entering "00.274.373.649" and it should work.

This issue still occurs on the current musicbrainz server (and also on test.mb.org).

If you enter a 9-digit IPI number, e.g. 609117854, you will get an error back saying
"Field must be at least 11 characters. You entered 9"
