You're supposed to have a verified email address to be able to edit. If you remove your email address, as long as you don't log out, you can continue editing.

This has failed beta testing as:

It doesn't work when an admin changes a users email address
If a user is already in a session where they can edit (but don't have an email address) they can still edit.

The merge window for 2012-10-01 is now closed, so this will have to wait until 2012-10-15.
