this issue is fixed when creating new artists (e.g. http://beta.musicbrainz.org/edit/18451983), but still persists when changing the date. see:

edit: oh, it's probably unrelated, since now i see the name of this ticket. should i create a new one?

Yeah, go ahead and make a new one for that – after our little chat today in IRC I think that shouldn't be too hard for the type-isn't-changing case.
