We know whether a release has cover art in the cover art archive. I don't see why we shouldn't share that information with people when they request releases via the webservice, instead of making everyone do extra requests to find it out themselves.

An example where it would be useful is Picard: https://github.com/musicbrainz/picard/pull/31

What type of data would people like to see? There are options for:

has cover art: True if the release has some cover art, regardless of type
amount of cover art: The amount of cover art images
Has front: If /front will resolve
Has back: If /back will resolve

If we decide what information is required, I can make this happen.

IMO "has cover art" is the most important, as that allows you to completely skip the cover art step if there's no cover art.
I can imagine that "has front" would be nice for people who are only interested in the front cover though.

Interested parties: please go look at that. I'd like to make sure this is sufficient for what people want/need and that I'm doing things right (this is my first patch touching the webservice); the more eyes the better!

Review was discarded only temporarily since I was taking a bit of a hiatus from the main flow of MB last week, but I won't reopen it until I've done a bit more work and it needs further review. So, I'm reopening this for now.

Correct; the latter is a search and thus out of my control. So presumably if that's desired we need a SEARCH ticket.
