 Description  « Hide

Tension between normalized data and what the cover says is a recurring source of conflict. A technical solution to this problem would be to add support for alternative tracklists on a single release. These kinds of alternative tracklists would be useful:

• "exactly as on cover"
• official translation, for releases that have titles in mulitple languages
• unofficial translations, for which we currently use pseudo-releases

I think this was first suggested by someone (not me) on musicbrainz-style, but I can't find the original discussion.

This is the best replacement for pseudo releases as well, you get my vote of course.

Forgot to say, we should have a user setting stipulating that we prefer brwosing the as on release versions or the others (radio buttons, you know - with, for the people who choose the translated version, a select to pick up one's language).

I like this idea.
The alternative tracklist should also contain a field for the release title and artist credits so they could also be translated.

I hope this makes the May 15th schema change. This would also resolve "hiding pseudo-releases from Label pages", which is something I'd like to see happen sooner rather than later.

Just about to propose the same thing. Glad I'm not the only one who sees the need for it.

Other issues with the pseudo-release type are the lack of sync with between the pseudo- and true release.
i.e. Release 1 gets edited, but pseudo-release 1p doesn't (especially problematic for things like Disc IDs, associated recordings etc.) This happens a lot.

Agreed about artist credits and release title. But obviously artist credit would have to be designed carefully, to make sure that only the visual changes, not the substance. By that I mean, to stop someone changing
"Some Track [by] Jane feat. Joe" into
"Some Track feat. Joe [by] Jane" in the alternative tracklist.

There should be some way to lock the artists, allowing changes only to joining text and how artists credited.
