Set barcode for all releases in database with release year < 1974 to [none]

Created: 17/Feb/12 05:10 PM   Updated: 01/Sep/12 08:09 AM   Resolved: 31/Aug/12 07:08 PM
Component/s: Scripts
Affects Version/s: None
Fix Version/s: None

 Description  « Hide

Rather than letting bots and/or editors do the job, since we know that no barcode was used before a given date (1974 is fairly safe according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barcode), we could as well just make an update directly in database with a script.

Do we want to risk adding more incorrect data where users have entered the original release year for a release though?

Aurélien Mino added a comment - 17/Feb/12 11:35 PM

Releases where users have entered the original release year will need some fixes anyway, so it seems easy to fix the date and at the same date the barcode if needed.
I agree that there's no perfect choice, but I believe what I'm suggesting here has a better benefits/risks ratio.

Feel free to close as Won't fix if I'm the only thinking that.

About 1974.
I'm not good at english but it seems they say that 1974 is the year the first stuff was scanned in USA.
So the bar codes could already exist before (before the scanners for instance) and what about the rest of the world ?

Maybe this links are useful (different types of barcodes and story):
