I suggest to add some collection indicators (colours, different font, small icons like on Discogs), e.g.

  • to the artist overview to indicate RGs that contain releases from my collection
  • to the releases tab of an artist page to indicate releases from my collection
  • to the release group pages to indicate releases from my collection
  • to any edit views to indicate that a release / RG / recording / work from my collection is edited
  • to the recordings and works tab of an artist page to show recordings and works that are part of / related to one of my collection items

I also think this should be on the server, but until then there is a userscript by jesus2099 wich works for the moment: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/126380

Hi JonnyJD ! Thanks for letting me know of this earlier ticket !

I suggest that we need either of these two propositions, because we can or do have multiple collections (not only one collection) per user.

  • In the collection editor (where you can edit public/private and name), add a colour selector (each collection will be marked in mentioned appropriate places, using a distinct colour)
    • Decide what to do with releases that are in multiple collections (blend colours, concatenate all marks, etc.)

OR

  • Replace « my collection » by « my collections » in all the above ticket's text

I'm interested in some further feedback for this issue. Specifically, what's being asked for (in comparison to the linked userscript)?

I'd like a few usecases as to why this would be needed. Here's one to set the ball rolling:

I have a collection that is "CDs I own". I would like to be able to look at an artist list and see what releases I have a copy of. On the artist list, each RG with a release in my collection has an icon or indicator.

Some questions about this:

  • Not everyone uses collections for "Things I own". Should this be an option? (Should people be able to opt out of adding this indicator?)
  • What if I have 2 releases in a release group? Should there be a different indicator?
  • What if I have a release in 2 collections, each with a different indicator colour? Should it show 1? 2?

The userscript is great. The only bigger drawback is that the collections it handles are not auto-updating, i.e. if I add new elements to a collection the script doesn't know about them until I refresh. And a single refresh run can take hours.

> Not everyone uses collections for "Things I own". Should this be an option? (Should people be able to opt out of adding this indicator?)
I'm not sure if we need a special "Things I own" collection with features that other collections don't have. I just named one of my collections like this and use it like any of the other collections.

> What if I have 2 releases in a release group? Should there be a different indicator?
Yes, maybe something like a number in parentheses.
Personally, I like the Discogs solution. They have different tiny icons for every collection and next to the Master (= our release group) they display the icons for the content. E.g. if a Master contains 2 releases that are part of co1lection X and another that is part of co1lection Y then Discogs will display:
<Master title> X (2), Y

> What if I have a release in 2 collections, each with a different indicator colour? Should it show 1? 2?
Yes, if we are using icons.
But if we are using colours this is more difficult. A possible solution is to define one extra colour to indicate that an item is part of more than one collection.

Some examples of the collections I have: "collection" (= "things I own"), "wantlist", "incomplete" (for submissions that need fixing or additional ARs etc.), "great free music" (my recommendations, public).

BTW MeinDummy, forgot to say but I added an auto-update feature by SultS request some time ago.
It proposes to update when you add/remove to/from collection.
