From http://bugs.musicbrainz.org/ticket/4045

In lieu of the second part of http://wiki.musicbrainz.org/EmailVerificationFeature and http://bugs.musicbrainz.org/ticket/3583 could we perhaps have a function for AutoEditors to request/force reverification of a user's email address?

Given MB is now many years old, we appear to be getting to a stage where quite a few editors have been around for a while, but either ignore their edit note emails or emails are bouncing/unread since they've changed their address. This is quite frustrating for voters and editors to be ignored, and although some of the more regular voters will know these users and just NO-vote their edits, this doesn't seem optimal either in the case where the email address is just wrong.

Previously I have asked rob to force reverification manually for individual users, but I believe this requires doing something in the DB manually so is not a scalable solution.

Would it be difficult to allow AutoEditors or CommuityCaretakers (I made that up) to have a button on other users' profile pages to say "Request email reverification", that would disable their account from editing and force them to validate again? It'd be nice if it also made it obvious on their profile that their address was pending verification too, so multiple editors didn't re-request verification.

Maybe this is a bad idea. Maybe it's too hard. But it seems good in my head. :-]

+1 for the feature.
Thinking more in depth about it, would this need a more or less formal procedure (e.g. a post/debate on the auto-editor mailing list) or would it be left to the auto-editors' discretion?

Also, this would probably deserve a line or two amending the Code of Conduct.

Some sort of related tickets:

MBS-1438 which would make it easy for Rob to nuke email addresses
MBS-1227 which mentions something about removing email addresses which are bouncing (not sure how far we've got with that)
MBS-1801 which would reduce our reliance on emails
