 Description  « Hide

When changing artist type from 'Person' to 'Group': Before and after saving, setting of 'gender' is possible. http://test.musicbrainz.org/artist/38a9dd50-aafd-491f-a7ea-29a07ea9ecfa
Expected behaviour is the option to set gender disappears?

I'm sorry for attaching two bugs (JIRA-4 and JIRA-5) to 'Jira'. I see no way to move/delete these myself...

Actually, this is slightly more complicated. Some people would like the ability to add a gender to groups - but no one is exactly sure how this should work! So we need someone to take the issue, and raise some form of RFC on the mailing lists. If anyone wants to do this, please assign the issue to yourself

Closing, if you do feel strongly about it still feel free to open the RFC, otherwise the behavior won't be changing

Why would you like to add a gender to groups?

I'd rather set the default behavior to something logical, that is hiding gender for groups.

Someone needs to take a style lead on this then.

If an RFC gets done before NGS launch, then it might make it earlier

Pavan Chander added a comment - 17/Feb/10 04:09 PM

So just to confirm: you're agreeing to postpone implementing genders for groups till an RFC is passed? If so, I'm fine with that.

I'll handle the RFC. I've also added MBS-450 to handle the alternative genders question.

Not my job

The RFC has occurred, and a resolution been passed by the Style Council. ( http://lists.musicbrainz.org/pipermail/musicbrainz-style/2010-March/008839.html )

Question: "Should group artists have genders?"
Answer: "No"

I'd note that while there were comments in support of this answer, during all phases of the resolution (discussion, RFC, and RFV), not a single email even vaguely in support of groups having genders was sent, so this resolution not only passed, but was unanimous even before it passed. (Rare enough on the style list, where discussion of a proposal/resolution does happen, to be worth mentioning! )

Reopening; the RFC and prior discussion here was to decide whether groups should have genders, but reading the ticket, it seems to be pointing out an additional / different issue, where gender does actually get assigned to an artist, if that artist is first set to person type+gender, then changed to group type - gender not then clearing.
